Does anyone have a link to a simple explanation about carbide inserts. So far I've used high speed steel, brazed carbide tooling and some insert tooling that turned up with the lathe, Recently I bought a second-hand boring bar which I think is an early Sandvick, but I can't find any references to it on the web!
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Matthew

Thanks Mark,
I've made some progress!!
So it's :-
A :- steel bar w/ coolant hole
25 ;- 1 5/6" ø
T ;- 12" long
S :- Screw Lock only
V :- 35°diamond
U :--3° endcutting
B :- 5° relief
R :- Right hand
16 :- 16mm?
I am assuming that the 16 is 16mm as the imperial units don't match.
Based on the table for inserts on the same site:-
The insert is a
V 35°diamond
B 5° relief
Tolerance?
H Looks like a 70° to 90° Countersink
I don't understand the code for the length which looks like 16mm
Thanks again Mark, I'm getting somewhere!! Cheers, Matthew

Here are some charts with imperial measurements, from KBC Tools.

If the pictures are too big you can view them at KBC Tools. Click on the E-Catalog, page 162.

Thanks guys, I have now established that they are VBMT inserts.
Thanks again, I think I've made some progress as far as inserts are concerned! Cheers Matthew.
